Authorities are investigating a “horrific” car accident that left one person dead and six others injured at a Miami restaurant.
According to NBC 6, the incident occurred Thursday night at the Italian eatery Call Me Gaby, located at 22 Washington Avenue in South Beach. Police say at around 6 p.m. an “elderly” woman was trying to parallel park her Bentley when she instead accelerated into the restaurant’s outdoor dinning area, running over tables and patrons.
“The driver who caused this accident remained on the scene and is cooperating with investigators,” Miami Beach Police spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez told the outlet. “Right now all indications lead us to believe that this was a horrific accident however more investigation is required.”
Authorities confirmed seven people were transported to the hospital, where one of them ultimately died from their injuries. Though police have not publicly identified the victims, it’s reported that one of them was a 3-year-old who suffered minor cuts and bruises.
“We have our accident investigations unit recreating the scene, they’re using technology which is 3D forensic imaging to truly recreate the scene and assess exactly what transpired in the moments leading up to this crash,” Rodriguez said.
On Friday, Call Me Gaby took to Instagram to release a statement on the tragic events.
“We are deeply saddened and devastated by last night’s tragic event,” the statement read. “On behalf of everyone within the Call Me Gaby family, our thoughts and prayers go out to those injured and deceased in the incident and their loved ones. We hold all those involved close to our hearts.”
Miami police have yet to file any charges.
