At least 10 people are killed after a shooting took place Saturday night near a Lunar New Year celebration in the Los Angeles suburb of Monterey Park, CNN reports.
The shooting happened just before 10:30 p.m. local time, when a gunman opened fire at a dance studio, killing 10 and wounding 10. It’s worth noting Monterey Park is an Asian American enclave, with 65% of its citizens identifying as Asian American, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
As of Sunday morning, the gunman remains at large.
“We don’t know if it’s targeted,” Sheriff’s Capt. Andrew Meyer said at a press briefing early Sunday. “We will look at every angle, including if it was a hate crime or not.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom took to Twitter on Sunday to share a statement about the tragic event.
“Monterey Park should have had a night of joyful celebration of the Lunar New Year. Instead, they were the victims of a horrific and heartless act of gun violence,” he wrote. “Our hearts mourn as we learn more about the devastating acts of last night.”
President Biden also issued a statement via Twitter, writing, “Jill and I are praying for those killed and injured in last night’s deadly mass shooting in Monterey Park. I’m monitoring this situation closely as it develops, and urge the community to follow guidance from local officials and law enforcement in the hours ahead.”
