2 Chainz Plans to Drop One More Solo Album on Def Jam Before Possibly Becoming Independent

Written by on January 19, 2020

2 Chainz is looking toward the future, which might involve him becoming an independent artist by the end of the year.

The Atlanta rapper told Zane Lowe on Apple Music on Friday: “I been with Def Jam for a long time. That’s my home right there. It’s no bad blood over there, I love what they’re doing. I’m just coming into another layer, another section in life to where it’s just about owning more.”

Chainz let Lowe know that leaving Def Jam isn’t definite, and could change based on how negotiations proceed. “Who knows? I might stick around. … But for now, I’m looking forward to possibly being independent by the end of the year and rocking out with my guys.”

Chainz has released five albums with the legendary label, beginning with his debut Based on a T.R.U. Story in 2012 to last year’s Rap or Go to the League.

Chainz also discussed his new single “Dead Man Walking,” in collaboration with Future, a song Chainz has been wanting to make for some time. He began teasing the song last summer when rumors surfaced that there was tension between the two rappers.

He’s also gearing up to release a compilation album for his T.R.U. label, NO FACE NO CASE, which drops Feb. 7 via Atlantic Records. The project’s first single “Virgil Discount” with his artist Skooly is available now.
