Written by on August 20, 2022

Three people were killed when two small planes collided mid-air in California on Thursday.

CBS News reports the accident took place before 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon at the Watsonville Municipal Airport in Watsonville, California–a city located about 50 miles south of San Jose. A twin-engine Cessna 340 crashed into a single-engine Cessna 152.

One person was on board the Cessna 152 and two people were on board the Cessna 340. All three people listed as casualties.

The city of Watsonville took to Twitter on Friday to share its condolences, saying it was “absolutely saddened to hear about the tragic incident that took the lives of several people.”

“The City of Watsonville sends its deepest condolences to the friends and family of those who passed,” they added. Watsonville Mayor Ari Parker added, “We are grieving tonight from this unexpected and sudden loss. I want to express my deepest and most heartfelt condolences.”

The sheriff’s office said the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were investigating.
