4.0 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks California’s Ventura County

Written by on February 27, 2022

Southern California was rattled by an earthquake Saturday evening.

ABC affiliate KABC reports the U.S. Geological Survey measured the earthquake at a magnitude of 4.1 on the Richter scale. The quake, which had a depth of about 16 miles, hit about 6 miles northwest of Santa Paula in Ventura County, while also rocking various parts of Los Angeles County.

“Both are very deep for Southern California,” seismologist Lucy Jones wrote on Twitter. “Very deep quakes will be felt in a different pattern than shallow ones,” Jones wrote. “If you enter your felt report, we will have more data to compare the deep to shallow quakes.”

Authorities at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s station in Lost Hills tweeted about the quake, writing, “We felt a little rumble at the station. We have no reports of any damage or injuries in our area.”

Officials believe Saturday’s quake was felt as far south as Long Beach and as far west as Santa Barbara.

“Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter,” the U.S. Geological Survey said in a report.
