A Chinese immigrant who was brutally attacked in April in New York City has died of the injuries he sustained, according to ABC News.
Yao Pan Ma, 61, died on Dec. 31—eight months after he was attacked while collecting cans in Harlem, police share. The case is now beeing deemed a homicide after 49-year-old Jarrod Powell was already charged with with attempted murder, felony assault and hate crime charges.
Surveillance video, up above, shows an attacker stomping on Ma, as prosecutors say Powell attacked Ma from behind and knocked him over before kicking him and fleeing.
Powell later admitted to attacking an Asian man at the time and location where Ma was attacked, claiming that the man had robbed him the day before, per a police detective.
Ma was reportedly collecting cans after he had lost his job as a resturaunt employee due to the pandemic, and his wife shared that he came to the U.S. in 2019 as a Chinese citizen. The attack ended up bringing added national attention to anti-Asian hate crimes last year, which were seeing a rise around that time.
