Beto O’Rourke has formally announced that he is indeed running for POTUS, a title currently held by whatever the hell this is called.
“Amy and I are happy to share with you that I’m running to serve you as the next president of the United States of America,” O’Rourke said in a joint video statement with Amy Hoover Sanders. “This is a defining moment of truth for this country and for every single one of us.”
O’Rourke also broke down the core challenges he believes the country is facing, pointing to a moment of potential peril that could also bring out the best in us. Specifically, O’Rourke pointed to the “interconnected crises” bubbling beneath our economy, the idea of democracy, and our climate.
A campaign kickoff rally, per the Texas Tribune, is set for March 30. O’Rourke’s video announcement was preceded Wednesday evening by a text to local outlet KTSM in which he indicated that he would be joining the race.
Last year, O’Rourke received a wave of support (including from fellow Texan Travis Scott) during his extremely close Senate run. He’s joined in the 2020 proceedings by previously announced Democrats including Cory Booker, Kamala Harris, and Bernie Sanders.
