Conor McGregor was arrested in Ireland for “alleged road traffic violations,” the Irish Independent reports.
McGregor was driving around Dublin last night when he was pulled over by authorities in his Bentley Continental GT. The UFC star was detained and taken to a nearby police station. “Mr. McGregor was driving to the gym when he was stopped by [Irish police] for alleged road traffic violations,” his spokesperson Karen Kessler told ESPN in a statement. “He passed the drug and alcohol tests taken at the station.”
His car was also seized at the time of his arrest, but eventually returned to him.
McGregor was charged with dangerous driving and released on bail after being ordered to appear in court next month. It will ironically be the same court where he was fined for speeding in 2017. McGregor could be fined and/or spend up to six months in prison if convicted.
The Irish Independent notes McGregor has been spending time in Dublin training for an anticipated return to the UFC this year. He suffered fractures to his tibia and fibula during his rematch against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021. It was his third loss in his last four matches and second straight defeat at the hands of Poirier.
Footage showed McGregor threatening to kill Poirier and his wife “in their sleep” as he sat on the mat getting looked over by doctors. Despite the unfortunate finish in their last fight, Poirier vowed that they will meet again “whether it’s in the octagon or on the sidewalk.”
McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh listed six potential opponents for the former UFC Lightweight champion upon his return. One of them was Poirier.
