Premiere: Rising Alt-Soul Talent Jeff Darko Reveals Immersive “Strange Drea

Having broken through with his two first singles, “Follow You” and “Blue Skies”, last year, alt-R&B/soul singer Jeff Darko is looking to make an even bigger splash with the release of his debut EP, Strange Dreams. That’s due to land tomorrow, May 11, but before that he’s dropping off the hypnotizing, late-night visuals for its title track.
Directed by Masha Zhemchuzhina, it’s an eerie, mystifying treatment. Dream-like in the most unsettling way, we see the British-Ghanaian desperately trying to run through a crowd but making minimal progress, an arm is seen poking out the boot of a car—and those are far from the only creepy little details peppered around the video. Even more impressive than those touches is the fact this was all shot in one continuous take, dialling up the uncanny smoothness even further.
Speaking on the concept behind the track, Jeff Darko shares: “It’s a journey of perspectives, this song and video is a mirror of what we go through. The mirror can only reflect the truth which is often hidden/filtered by the adult. In this case it’s the undeniable truth revealed through the lens of a child about the state of our world today.”
On the subject of the tracks visuals and the symbolism it employs, Zhemchuzhina adds: “The traffic road (in the film) represents life. Each car represents an important piece in the protagonist’s life. What happens inside is a separate episode that contributed to changing his path.”
