9-Year-old Uvalde Shooting Survivor Discharged From Hospital

A 9-year-old survivor of the Uvalde school shooting has been released from the hospital.
The University Health System in San Antonio announced the discharge Saturday, less than two weeks after a gunman killed 19 children and two students at Robb Elementary school—marking the deadliest U.S. school shooting in about a decade. According to ABC News, 17 people were hospitalized with injuries sustained in the massacre; as of press time, all but five have been released.
The University Hospital also provided updates on two other victims: a 10-year-old girl who is said to be in critical condition, and a 66-year-old woman—believed to be the gunman’s grandmother—who is in stable condition.
According to the San Antonio Express News, a 10-year-old boy who was injured in the shooting remains in good condition at the Methodist Healthcare hospital in San Antonio. On Monday, the Brooke Army Medical Center announced two adult victims it had received from the shooting were also in good condition; however, the facility has not provided an update since.
“We continue to pray for comfort and strength for all affected by this terrible tragedy,” BAMC wrote on Facebook.
Police say the 18-year-old gunman shot his 66-year-old grandmother in the face before driving his vehicle to Robb Elementary. Authorities say the suspect entered the building through a back door and gained access to adjoining classrooms. The gunman reportedly spent 80 minutes inside the school before he was shot and killed by A U.S. Border Patrol tactical team.
In the days since the tragedy unfolded, Uvalde law enforcement are facing mounting scrutiny over their slow response to the situation, as well as their vague and conflicting explanations about what exactly took place. Though the Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the case, ABC News reports the Uvalde Independent School District police force and Uvalde Police Department are no longer cooperating with the probe.
