Ice Cube Calls on Warner Bros. to ‘Do the Right Thing’ With ‘Friday’ Rights

Written by on January 2, 2023

Ice Cube continues to fight Warner Bros. over the rights to the iconic Friday film franchise.

Over the weekend, TMZ caught up with the hip-hop legend while he was visiting Dash Radio in Los Angeles. During their chat, Cube was asked to shed light on the situation concerning Warner Bros.’ control over the Friday rights.

The TMZ reporter asked Cube whether he could write a script based on a different day of the week, which he quickly shut down. “You got to use the same IP,” he explained. “So, you can’t call it Saturday without using Craig and Day Day.”

When asked if new Friday film is a “lost cause,” Ice Cube remained positive about the franchise’s future. “No, never,” he said, before calling on Warner Bros. to “do the right thing.”

As for if he’s considered suing the studio, Cube said, “No, ain’t gonna sue nobody.”

Cube’s comments arrive a month after he detailed his battle with Warner Bros. in an appearance on Mike Tyson’s podcast.

“Warner Bros. is weird right now,” Cube said when asked about the fourth Friday installment, which is to be titled Last Friday. “I don’t know what they’re doing. They don’t know what they’re doing. We’d love to have it back. I think it’s going be close to a time when we get it back. So, we’ll either wait for that time, or we’ll keep trying to convince them that they need to let us control the movie. It’s my movie, but they have distribution control.”

When Tyson asked Cube if he would just pay to have the rights back in his control, Cube responded, “I ain’t putting shit up for it. Fuck no. They need to give it to me, and they’re going to make money. I’m not about to pay for my own stuff, that’s stupid. They need to do the right thing, get it to us, let us turn it into more money, and make the fans happy…We can do a lot with it.”
