A new report has found Niagara Falls to be the biggest tourist trap in Canada and one of the biggest in the world.
For the report, vacation rental company Casago searched thousands of reviews on TripAdvisor for the phrase “tourist trap” to see which global tourist attractions featured it the most frequently. In an effort to specify the data, Casago then narrowed down the search to each U.S. state and each country.
Casago spotlighted a review of Niagara Falls, explaining that “every attraction dumped you into a gift shop.”
The report also ranked the top tourist trap per country by use of the “tourist trap” phrase. Leading the charge was Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco with 1050 mentions of the aforementioned phrase.
Down in seventh place is Niagara Falls where Casago discovered that reviewers had written “tourist trap” 475 times across thousands of reviews.
For context, Casago explained that some of the world’s biggest tourist traps happened to be among the “the world’s most iconic landmarks,” including the Eiffel Tower and the Taj Mahal. Despite the high usage of “tourist trap” Niagara Falls reviews, the popular destination spot failed to crack the top 10 tourist traps in the world.
The U.S. featured four of the top 10 tourist trap locations.
For context, the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin, Ireland featured 516 uses of the phrase “tourist trap,” meaning that Niagara Falls wouldn’t have fallen too far behind it. Its exact place in the biggest tourist traps in the world wasn’t disclosed in the report.
