Nav Clarifies His Comments About Getting No Love From Paparazzi

Written by on May 4, 2019

Nav insists he doesn’t get “sick” when the paparazzi overlooks him.

In a March interview with Pitchfork, the XO artist opened up about his burgeoning fame and being ignored by outlets like TMZ.

“Honestly, I feel like I’m just now starting to get famous,” he said. “But fame is something I want, it’s a good problem to have. I’m still not there, because when I walk out of fucking Delilah in L.A. and TMZ will be standing out there with cameras and not even take a picture of me, I get sick. I get in my fucking Lambo truck right in front of them. All my jewelry on and they don’t even take one picture.”

The comments immediately went viral, and eventually helped Nav land a brief appearance on TMZ. Though he claims the paparazzi have shown him more love in the weeks after the Pitchfork piece, Nav says his comments about fame were slightly twisted. The Bad Habits artist attempted to clarify his statement during a recent interview with Ebro Darden.

“Honestly, that’s not even a part of my lingo. I don’t say ‘I get sick.’ I never say that in my lingo,” Nav explained (2:35). “I feel like maybe they twisted it to get a little hype. But really, I said, ‘I be surprised.’ You know what I mean?”

He continued: “Like when I come outside, I be surprised that they don’t [take my picture]. I never said I get sick. Because me, personally, like I said, I’m a shy guy. I don’t really like attention that much. But at the end of the day, if they’re snapping you, that means you’re doing something right—or wrong.”

Nav went on to discuss his past struggles with speaking to the media. He explained that he was hesitant to give interviews at the beginning of his career because he was still trying to figure himself out. Though he has become more comfortable in the public eye, Nav admits he doesn’t know how to act when he receives crazy amounts of attention.

“I’m ready for what comes with success. It’s part of the job,” he said. “But I’m not a controversial person. Like I don’t got a lot of controversy around me…. I’m pretty quiet in the media. It’s just the way I carry myself.”

You can check out the Beats 1 interview above. Nav also discusses his No. 1 album Bad Habits, and working with artists like Meek Mill and Lil Durk.
