Windhorst: Zion Williamson Could Go Back to Duke Rather Than Be Drafted by Pelicans

Written by on May 16, 2019

As a New York Knicks fan, Tuesday’s NBA Draft Lottery was a blur.

After months of wishing and praying and hoping for the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft, the Knicks’ season-long tank job proved to be unsuccessful when the ping pong balls determined that the organization would be picking third.

Despite the Knicks having a 14 percent chance of selecting first overall, it was the Pelicans with their six percent odds that came away with the right to take Duke standout Zion Williamson.

Once the draft order was finally sorted out, I spent the next hour or two just staring at the ceiling, trying to convince myself that getting Duke’s R.J. Barrett at No. 3 wasn’t so bad. The slow progression from depression to acceptance could best be summed up by that Alonzo Mourning GIF:

When I finally returned to social media, I discovered that Williamson was also reportedly not too enthusiastic about the idea of going to the Pelicans.

ESPN’s Marc J. Spears reported that Williamson was “rooting to go to New York.”

But now, Zion is stuck in New Orleans. Or is he? During today’s episode of ESPN’s The Jump, Brian Windhorst floated the idea that Williamson could still go back to Duke, instead of going into this year’s draft.

“He does have some options. I’m not saying he’s going to pick these options, but he has not signed with an agent and he has not signed a shoe deal yet,” Windhorst explained. “He could threaten to go back to Duke.”
