Dell Curry Told the Warriors Not to Draft Steph

Dell Curry revealed that he tried to talk Golden State out of picking his son with the seventh pick in the 2009 NBA Draft.
In an interview with NBC Sports, the NBA veteran revealed a private conversation he had with then-head coach Don Nelson. Nelson called the elder Curry to ask his honest opinion on his son going to Oakland and Curry tried to shut him down.
“Don’t,” Dell remembered telling Nelson. “You asked me the question, I’ll tell you the truth. Don’t [draft him].”
The entire Curry family was hoping for Steph to land in New York. At the time, all reports indicated that Steph himself wanted to end up on the Knicks. Instead, he went to the then-lowly Warriors and things worked out pretty decently.
Steph has won two MVP awards with the Warriors while leading them to four straight NBA Finals. Along with Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, Curry has helped change the way basketball games are played and picked up three titles. The team is at the point where any rumor of wanting to leave gets immediately squashed. All that was unknowable in 2009, however, and the Currys aren’t afraid to admit it.
