Woodstock 50 Loses Venue After Watkins Glen International Announces Decision to Cancel

Written by on June 10, 2019

Woodstock 50 is facing yet another uphill battle after what was the expected location for the event, Watkins Glen International, announced Monday that it has pulled out.

“Watkins Glen International terminated the site license for Woodstock pursuant to provisions of the contract,” a statement obtained by Variety earlier today reads. “As such, WGI will not be hosting the Woodstock 50 Festival.”

With Woodstock 50 slated to begin on August 16, this latest setback could be the final blow for a festival that has endured plenty in its ongoing fight to stay on track. In late April, the event’s former investor Dentsu Aegis Network announced that Woodstock 50 had been cancelled over production limitations.

The event’s organizers denied those claims, and took Dentsu to court in an attempt to retrieve the $17.8 million that was put into the festival. A Manhattan judge ruled last month that Woodstock 50 could go on as planned, but their financial backing from Dentsu would not restored.

Shortly after their situation with Dentsu was resolved, Woodstock 50 found a new investor in American investment bank Oppenheimer & Co. Everything finally seemed to be getting back on track for the festival until it was dealt this latest blow. The organizers behind Woodstock 50 have put up a good fight to keep the show on the road, but at what point does that hill become too steep of a climb?

Stay tuned as more information about the fate of Woodstock 50 rolls in.
