Jorge Masvidal’s Knockout of Ben Askren Was the Fastest in UFC History

Written by on July 7, 2019

One of UFC 239‘s main card fights ended in record-breaking fashion as Jorge Masvidal earned the fasted knockout in UFC history.

Immediately after the match began, it was over. Masvidal unleashed a vicious flying knee that hit his opponent Ben Askren directly in the temple. Askren crumbled to the severity of the blow and Masvidal was awarded the knockout and victory. Along with creating a viral moment, Masvidal also made history. The ref officially called the fight just 5 seconds into the opening round. That made the bout the shortest match in UFC history, beating out the 2006 fight between Duane Ludwig and Jonathan Goulet by one second.

Masvidal knee was the cumulation of an on-going feud with Askren. Before the fight, the two had went back and forth in verbal exchanges. As a result, Masvidal taunted Askren as medics came to clear him off the mat as well as openly admitting that he wished the fight was longer.

“I really wanted to beat his ass for 14 minute and 30 seconds but it didn’t happen, so back to business,” Masvidal said before responding to those that criticized his post-fight antics. “There’s not too many people I’ve disliked more. I have over 50 pro fights and he’s one of them. He talked about my manhood, he talked about my culture, my ethnicity. Where do we draw the line? Why do certain people get to do stuff online? So everything is cool before the fight?… But after a fight, I’m not allowed to showboat and rub it in your face.” He then went on to claim that his beef with Askren isn’t over despite his in-ring victory.

“It’s not over for Ben,” he continued. “If I see that dude at Whole Foods, I’m going to slap that dude up because I don’t like him.”
