Former MLB Pitcher Dwight Gooden Charged With Cocaine Possession

Written by on July 12, 2019

Dwight “Doc” Gooden was busted last month for alleged cocaine possession and driving under the influence, authorities announced Friday.

According to the Daily News, the former MLB pitcher was pulled over by New Jersey police on June 7 after he committed traffic violations. During the stop, officers reportedly discovered “two, small green zip-lock style plastic baggies containing suspected cocaine” in Gooden’s possession. The 54-year-old was subsequently charged with third-degree possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving under the influence.

If convicted, the ex-Mets and Yankees star faces up to five years behind bars. He is scheduled to appear in court July 23.

Gooden’s struggles with substance abuse have been well documented over the years. The two-time World Series champ tested positive for drugs multiple times between 1987 and 1994, and was suspended for an entire season in 1995 due to his drug use.
