Avengers: Endgame is closing in on a historic achievement. According to Variety, the film earned $2.8 million globally this weekend. That lifted the movie’s total ticket sales to $2.78 billion worldwide, moving it closer to becoming the top-grossing film in box office history. James Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi film Avatar holds the top spot after earning $2.788 billion in the box office. After this weekend, Avengers: Endgame is just $7.16 million behind Avatar‘s gross.
During its initial rollout, Avengers: Endgame grossed $851 million at the domestic box office and $1.9 billion in global markets. The movie was then re-released ahead of Spider-Man: Far From Home so that Marvel lovers could relive the end of the Infinity Saga before the studio transitions to Peter Parker’s adventures. This helped both Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home as it was billed as Endgame‘s official follow-up.
As the new face of Marvel’s film series, Tom Holland helped lift Spider-Man: Far From Home to $274 million in the North American territory and $847 million globally. The movie has now topped the box office for the second week in a row since its premiere.
