Three 6 Mafia’s upcoming reunion shows could be the catalyst for a new album.
“As far as an album, we’ll see when we get there,” DJ Paul told TMZ, adding that the reunion “is a start.”
The group announced a string of reunion shows in mid-August, the first of which happened on Saturday at Atlanta’s One Musicfest. DJ Paul described how it’s been 19 years since everybody was on stage together, and how he’s most excited about their Memphis show, Return of Three 6 Mafia on Oct. 12. The group is also performing on Oct. 11 at Loud Records’ 25th Anniversary celebration concert in New Jersey.
DMX and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony are slated to perform with Three 6 at their hometown show, as well as the original Hypnotize Camp Posse members, including Crunchy Black, Gangsta Boo, Project Pat, Lil Wyte, and La Chat.
Juicy J and DJ Paul distanced themselves from Three 6 after the group went on hiatus in 2011. However, in 2013, DJ Paul created the offshoot Da Mafia 6ix with a few original members from Three 6: Crunchy Black, Koopsta Knicca, Lord Infamous, and Gangsta Boo. Speaking to HipHopDX, DJ Paul clarified that the crew was “not a Three 6 Mafia reunion,” but “a totally new group.” In 2013, Da Mafia 6ix released its first mixtape, 6ix Commandments.
The last album Three 6 released was 2008’s Last 2 Walk, deriving its title from the fact that DJ Paul and Juicy J were the last two members remaining in the group. Their album Laws of Power—set to release in 2010—was ultimately shelved. If they do release another project as a group, it would be their tenth album.
