Broadway Theater Will Screen Netflix and Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’ for a Month

With the theatrical release of Martin Scorsese’s new epic The Irishman less than a month away, Netflix announced the movie will also hit Broadway. The streaming giant already planned to release The Irishman in theaters on Nov. 1 ahead of its Netflix debut on Nov. 27, but it will now also show at Broadway’s Belasco Theatre for a whole month with eight showings a week.
From Nov. 1 to Dec. 1, the Belasco will show the three-and-a-half-hour-long movie Tuesday through to Sunday, with additional showings on Saturday and Sunday. It’s not quite the stage show some would have hoped for at such an announcement, but it is a bold move for Netflix’s Oscar hopeful. The Irishman will mark the first movie screening at the Belasco Theatre in its 112-year history.
Netflix plans to supply Belasco with state-of-the-art screening equipment. “We’ve lost so many wonderful theaters in New York City in recent years, including single house theaters like the Ziegfeld and the Paris,” Scorsese said of the move. “The opportunity to recreate that singular experience at the historic Belasco Theatre is incredibly exciting.”
Scorsese recently sparked discourse online after he dared to criticize Marvel movies. “I don’t see them,” he said in an interview with Empire. “I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema. Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”
