Eddie Murphy Talks Long-Awaited Return to Stand-Up on ‘Kimmel’

Written by on October 25, 2019

Eddie Murphy discussed his impending return to the art of stand-up comedy on Thursday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Asked about the potential pressure of living up to a legacy, Murphy disputed the value of such thinking.

“Nah, I don’t be worrying about stuff like that,” he said. “I tend to think constructively if I’m doing something creative. I’m thinking about making it as funny as possible because I wanna shut shit down when I do it but I don’t be thinking like ‘What’s gonna happen? What’re they gonna say? Are they gonna put me on the YouTube?’ That’s just part of the world now.”

Back in September, Murphy informed fans that next year would be bringing some new road dates.

“Next year, in 2020, I’m going to go on the road and do some stand-up,” he said on an episode of Present Company With Krista Smith. A few months prior to that revelation, he chopped it up with Jerry Seinfeld on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee about his stand-up return. Around the same time, TMZ reported that the comedian had been in negotiations “hovering right around” the $70 million mark for a deal focused on the release of multiple comedy specials.

“Everything just has to be right,” he said at the time.

On Thursday’s Kimmel, Murphy also discussed his fondness for ventriloquist dummies and his new Netflix movie Dolemite Is My Name. Catch the full discussion up top.
