When Kylie Jenner’s video of her singing “Rise and shine” to her daughter Stormi went viral, the businesswoman turned the moment into merch, which sold out quickly. However, rumors began circling that Kylie had sent cease and desist letters regarding use of the phrase.
On Sunday, the 22-year-old took to Twitter to debunk any such reports, writing, “guys, please don’t believe everything you read. I have not sent any Rise and Shine cease and desist letters.” She continued, “Rise and Shine was an unexpected moment.. I had a lot of fun with it, and I have laughed so hard seeing everyone’s memes since the video came out a few weeks ago..”
She added, “there are no law suits, no cease and desist letters. Happy Sunday.”
She also shut down Twitter account @EastRenaissance, which reported that Kylie had sent a cease and desist to a family who had been selling the t-shirts with the phrase since 2017.
In late October, a New Jersey woman came forward to say she already owns the rights to the “Rise and Shine” catchphrase. Cathy Beggan is the founder and president of Rise-N-Shine LLC, a nutritional supplement, vitamin, and cosmetics company that she founded in 2006. At the time, the founder said she was willing to fight for the trademark—but is also willing to work something out instead of taking the problem to court.
