Sheriff Calls Undocumented Immigrants ‘Drunks,’ Son Arrested for Public Intoxication

Written by on December 1, 2019

The son of Tarrant County, Texas Sheriff Bill Waybourn was arrested for public intoxication just a day after his father referred to undocumented immigrants as “drunks.”

Waybourn was at the White House on Thursday to oppose legislation regarding immigrants charged with driving under the influence. While arguing that repeat offenders are more dangerous, Waybourn dehumanized and demeaned undocumented immigrants.

“If we have to turn them loose or they get released, they’re coming back to your neighborhood and my neighborhood,” he said. “Those drunks will run over your children and they will run over my children.”

This sparked people to call for Waybourn’s resignation, but the power of irony and karma acted quicker.

On Friday, Waybourn’s son, Sergei, was arrested near AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. According to the Dallas Morning News, Waybourn was charged with public intoxication and indecent exposure. Details of Waybourn’s arrest weren’t immediately available, but this isn’t the first time he’s had run-ins with the law. Jail records show that Sergei Waybour was charged with assault in 2018 and has previous arrests for theft and trespassing.

Sheriff Waybourn released a statement on Saturday about his son’s arrest. In his response, Waybourn claims that Sergei has estranged himself from the family and is using drugs.

“The family and I are deeply saddened by Sergei’s choices,” the statement reads. “It has been many years since he disassociated from our family. We, along with many family members have made efforts over the years to help him – all to no avail. It is always sad when drugs take control of a person’s life. His choices and actions have lead to this situation.”
