After Kanye West’s first opera Nebuchadnezzar debuted in Los Angeles in November, he has premiered another production in Miami, titled Mary.
The opera featured music by the Sunday Service choir and was directed by Vanessa Beecroft, who also helmed Nebuchadnezzar. The Mary opera was billed as a collaboration between “the Sunday Service collective,” described in the press release as “a ministry formed in January of 2019,” and Access Opera. Mary unfolded at Miami Marine Stadium during Miami Art Basel. According to tweets from the event, there were twelve scenes involved in the production, which took place on a barge.

Kanye made the announcement via Twitter on Thursday night, alongside the Bible verses Luke 1:30-31: “And the angel said unto her, ‘Fear not, Mary: ‘For though hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in they womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus.’”
Page Six reports that Nebuchadnezzar didn’t sell out, and was widely criticized for bad acoustics and delays. The opera starred Sheck Wes as the Babylonian king, and according to the Los Angeles Times, Nebuchadnezzar was basically “Kanye reading Bible verses—and reading them very dramatically—as his choir delivered long, moody vocal lines without a huge amount of melodic movement.”
Yeezy is also working on his next album, Jesus Is Born, which is set to drop on Christmas Day—and the Jesus Is King sequel with Dr. Dre.
