Roddy Ricch Shares Story of Rapping for Kendrick at 14

Written by on December 10, 2019

Compton has been a breeding ground for transcendent rap artists since Dr. Dre and Eazy-E kicked down the door. Now the latest rapper from the Hub City looking to make his mark on the music industry is Roddy Ricch. During his appearance on The Breakfast Club on Tuesday, Roddy detailed how fellow Compton native, Kendrick Lamar, motivated him to continue pursuing music.

“Kendrick was a real big inspiration for me. I seen him when I was younger… ‘Rigamortis’ was out… maybe I was 14… I rapped for him,” Roddy said when asked if any Compton rappers have had an influence on him at the interview’s two-minute mark. “We had a cool conversation, but just cause we had a cool conversation don’t mean I’ma believe I could be that. N***a you probably put in a million hours that I ain’t put in.”

Eventually, the two reconnected through Kendrick’s friend, L. Kendrick met up with Roddy Ricch so that he could pick his brain for information that will help him succeed in the music industry.

“I really just asked him certain shit about family… Just being a young n***a coming in. Where can I put my money that would be good for me,” Roddy described. “I told [L] I wanted to meet him because he’s one of the people that I feel like would give me solid advice on what I’m thinking about doing just on a business point, on family, on anything and he made it happen for me.”

Roddy Ricch released his debut album, Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial, on Dec. 6. The album is expected to pull in between 75,000 and 85,000 equivalent album units in its first week. This could catapult the album to become No. 1 in the country.

You can watch the rest of interview where he touches on Nipsey Hussle, Juice WRLD, and more.
