Meghan Markle is ready to begin her new life slowly separating from the Royal Family. She reportedly signed a deal with Disney to benefit a wildlife charity of her choosing.
Markle will be doing voiceover work for Disney, according to the U.K. newspaper The Times. What she makes will be donated to Elephants Without Borders, a charitable organization dedicated to saving the animals from poachers. There are little details on what exactly Markle is working on, but we’ll probably find out in the coming months.
The pair wants to use their status as celebrities to push their causes forward, but as The Times points out, detractors believe that the couple is “cheapening the royal brand” by pursuing this partnership with Disney.
The Duchess of Sussex, along with her husband, Prince Harry, decided this week to take a “step back as senior members of the Royal Family.” They’re hoping to become “financially independent,” though they will continue to “fully support Her Majesty the Queen.” The couple also plans to spend more time in North America, creating progressive roles for themselves.
“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,” the pair wrote on Instagram. “We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages.”
