‘The Last Dance’ Is Now the Most In-Demand Documentary in the World

Written by on April 30, 2020

Bloomberg reports the ESPN docuseries The Last Dance has become the most in-demand documentary in the world, overtaking Netflix‘s Tiger King

Netflix currently owns the overseas rights to The Last Dance, but will be streaming the docuseries in the United States over the summer. The streaming service can eventually claim to have two of the biggest documentaries of the year. It became ESPN’s most-watched documentary after averaging 6.1 million viewers during the airing of the first two episodes on both networks.

According to Parrot Analytics, a research firm that uses social media interactions and piracy to determine audience interest, The Last Dance is one of the 20 most in-demand shows in the world this week, and the 11th-ranked show in the U.S.

Interest in documentaries have surged over the last few months with the ones centered around sports garnering even more attention than normal. “We are tracking a rise in demand for sports documentaries during the coronavirus pandemic,” Steve Langdon, director of partnerships at Parrot Analytics, said. Bloomberg pointed out that the influx in intrigue might be due to viewers not being able to watch live sports and these docs being the closest content they have to the real thing.

The Last Dance couples the pasts of Michael JordanScottie PippenDennis Rodman, and head coach Phil Jackson with the Chicago Bulls‘ pursuit of a second three-peat in their final season together during the 1997-98 campaign.
