Pete Davidson Gets Personal in New Trailer for ‘The King of Staten Island’

Written by on May 8, 2020

The King of Staten Island, a new Judd Apatow-directed comedy boasting a story that pulls from star and co-writer Pete Davidson‘s real life, now has a trailer ahead of its VOD release next month.

Pete Davidson plays Scott, a guy who’s now in his mid-20s and still dealing with a bit of paused ambition due to the death of his father—a firefighter—earlier in his life. Scott, who has aims on being a tattoo artist, is understandably not thrilled when his mother (Marisa Tomei) starts dating Ray (Bill Burr), who’s also a firefighter.

Davidson—who co-write the script with Apatow—is also joined in the cast by Bel Powley, Maude Apatow, Ricky Velez, and Steve Buscemi. Catch the new trailer for the Universal Pictures production up top.

In an extended interview with Entertainment Weekly published on Friday, Apatow described King as being built on an alternate version of Davidson’s own life.

“The movie is an imagining of what Pete’s life might have been like if he never found comedy,” Apatow, who years ago gave Davidson a boost by way of a small Trainwreck part, said. “Comedy really was his savior, it gave him direction. And in the movie he’s someone who is flailing about, not sure what he should do with his life.”

On Thursday night, Davidson and Apatow were guests on the latest at-home edition of Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show:

The King of Staten Island arrives on June 12.
