Academy Announces New Inclusion & Representation Standards for Best Picture
Written by SOURCE on September 9, 2020
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced new inclusion and representation standards for Best Picture eligibility.
Per a press release shared late Tuesday, the Academy—including governors DeVon Franklin and Jim Gianopulos—consulted with the Producers Guild of America and also used a British Film Institute-inspired template. Per Academy president David Rubin and Academy CEO Dawn Hudson’s joint statement, the new standards are part of their push for long-term change in the film industry.
“The aperture must widen to reflect our diverse global population in both the creation of motion pictures and in the audiences who connect with them,” Rubin and Hudson said on Tuesday. “The Academy is committed to playing a vital role in helping make this a reality. We believe these inclusion standards will be a catalyst for long-lasting, essential change in our industry.”
While submitting an Academy Inclusion Standards form will be required for Best Picture consideration for both the 94th and 95th Oscars ceremony in 2022 and 2023, respectively, meeting the thresholds will not be required for eligibility until 2024.
