Tia Mowry is returning to the small screen in a new family sitcom coming to Netflix. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the streaming giant ordered a 20-episode run of the multi-camera Family Reunion, which will also star Loretta Devine of Grey’s Anatomy and The Carmichael Show. The Sister, Sister actress’ latest endeavor is touted by Netflix as having an “incredibly talented all-black writers’ room.”
The show is created by Meg DeLoatch, who worked on Eve and Netflix’s Fuller House. It revolves around Mowry’s character, Cocoa McKellan, a “free-spirited mother from Seattle” who travels to a family reunion in Georgia with her former-football player husband Moz and four kids. Devine plays the family’s matriarch, M’Dear.
“We look forward to bringing families together to enjoy the hilarious and heartwarming stories of this multigenerational American family living together and discovering the importance of connecting with their roots,” said Melissa Cobb, the vice president of kids and family at Netflix. “Meg DeLoatch has created a warm, funny and memorable extended family that we believe will resonate with audiences around the world and she has assembled an incredibly talented all-black writers’ room to authentically portray these characters and their journey.”
It’s unclear when Netflix plans to drop Family Reunion, but so far every aspect of the show sounds promising. “I’m so excited to return to television, especially working with Netflix, and I can’t wait for everyone to see Family Reunion,” Mowry said. “I know my fans are going to love it!”
