Twitter Will Let People Know When a Reported Tweet Is Taken Down

Written by on October 18, 2018

Twitter announced Wednesday that they will begin to display whose tweets were taken down for violating their terms of service. The company claims that the change is meant to address questions regarding whether they were the ones responsible for getting a reported tweet deleted, or if the person who posted the tweet in question got rid of it on their own.

“Now, once we’ve required a Tweet to be deleted, we will display a notice stating that the Tweet is unavailable because it violated the Twitter Rules along with a link to the Rules and an article that provides more detail on how we enforce our rules,” Twitter writes via a blog post. “This notice will be displayed on both the account’s profile and the specific Tweet for 14 days after the Tweet is deleted.”

The move appears to be Twitter’s way of being more transparent with their users. The notice isn’t exactly meant to shame a user for their reported tweet, but to make others aware that they are taking action when something concerning is brought to their attention. If a high-profile figure with a controversial tweet gets their page slapped with one of these notices, then the app’s millions of users can see it.

The change is expected to go into effect within the next few weeks.
