Ariana Grande is slated to release an album titled Thank U, Next in the near future. However, right before Saturday Night Live, the singer dropped the title track. Following her breakup with fiancé Pete Davidson, many fans have speculated as to why the seemingly happy couple decided to call it quits, and this track gives a bit more clarity.
Ariana had been teasing the release of the song on Twitter and giving ambiguous responses to fans when they inquired for more info on what exactly they should expect.
However, she did drop a few, more explicit, hints along the way.
Although the title appears as if it could be about Pete, the singer told a fan that it’s actually a phrase she and her friend Victoria Monét often say. A source told TMZ that the song is about her experiences as well as self-empowerment, and is not centered around dissing Davidson, with whom she shared a home, a pet and a matching tattoo.
Grande mentioned her exes in the first verse of the song: Ricky Alvarez, Big Sean, Pete Davidson, and Mac Miller.
“Thought I’d end up with Sean, but it wasn’t a match. Wrote some songs about Ricky, now I listen and laugh. Even almost got married and for Pete, I’m so thankful. Wish I could say, “Thank you” to Malcolm, ‘Cause he was an angel.”
