Congressman Dan Crenshaw Forgives Pete Davidson for War Injury Joke on ‘SNL’

Saturday Night Live‘s Pete Davidson came under fire last week for a joke about the appearance of wounded former Navy SEAL and current Texas Republican Congressman-elect Dan Crenshaw. Days later, castmate Kenan Thompson admitted that comment “missed the mark” and said the show will figure out a way to “right that wrong.”
On Saturday, Davidson and SNL brought Crenshaw on “Weekend Update” to make amends.
“In what I know was a huge shock for people that know me, I made a poor choice last week…I made a joke about Lt. Comm. Dan Crenshaw and on behalf of the show and myself I apologize,” Davidson said. “If there is one good thing that came from this, maybe it was for one day the left and the right finally came together to agree on something: That I’m a dick.”
The joke served as the lead-in for Crenshaw’s appearance. After playfully thanking Davidson for finally making “a Republican look good,” Crenshaw allowed Pete to explain how he lost his eye before officially accepting the comedian’s apology.
He also got in a few jokes of his own. His phone rang during the conversation and the ringtone was Ariana Grande’s “Breathin’.” He let it play on for a while because he didn’t want to be rude by answering the phone.
Crenshaw repaid Davidson for his offending joke by making fun of a picture of the comedian. He closed out the segment on a sincere note by doing a short speech about Veterans Day and the United States.
“There are a lot of lessons to learn here. Not just that the left and the right can still agree on some things. But also this: Americans can forgive one another,” Crenshaw said. Watch his appearance above.
