Deadpool Defends Nickelback in New ‘Once Upon a Deadpool’ Trailer

Once Upon a Deadpool comes out this week, but before you head to the theater, Ryan Reynolds wants to share a few choice words about…Nickelback?
In the final teaser for the PG-13 re-edit of Deadpool 2, Deadpool joins an unwilling adult Fred Savage in a concept inspired by The Princess Bride. “I kinda prefer Marvel movies,” Savage says. When the merc with a mouth argues this movie is Marvel, Savage savagely counters, “Yeah, but you’re Marvel licensed by Fox. It’s kinda like if the Beatles were produced by Nickelback. It’s music, but it sucks…They’re overproduced, formulaic ear garbage.”
Deadpool quickly defends the widely despised rock group with some stats—including the fact that Nickelback is the “11th-best-selling musical act of all-time,” has six Grammy nominations, and is “Billboard‘s most successful rock group of the last decade.” It ends with Savage and Reynolds jamming out to “How You Remind Me.”
Reynolds shared the new trailer on Twitter, using the hashtag #RespecttheBack.
Nickelback responded, and it seems like the band is kind of, maybe flattered?
Reynolds reportedly gave into the PG-13 edit of the R-rated original under two conditions. “First, a portion of the proceeds had to go to charity. Second, I wanted to kidnap Fred Savage. The second condition took some explaining…” he said earlier this year.
One dollar of every ticket sold in the United States will be donated to Fudge Cancer, a nonprofit organization that raises awareness and provides education about early cancer detection and prevention. “While my participation in this film was anything but voluntary. I am happy to learn that Fudge Cancer will be the beneficiary of this shameless cash grab,” Savage told Deadline in November.
Once Upon a Deadpool comes out on Dec. 12.
