‘Luke Cage’ Creator Cheo Hodari Coker Inks Deal With Amazon

Written by on December 20, 2018

Cheo Hodari Coker, the creator and showrunner of Netflix’s Luke Cage, will now be developing new projects for Amazon Prime.

Thursday, Amazon Studios announced that Coker—who also penned the story behind this year’s Creed sequel—has inked an overall TV development deal. In a statement to Variety, Coker teased that the pairing would indeed please fans of his acclaimed approach to storytelling.

“Amazon is the future, and their bespoke, specific approach to building groundbreaking shows offers an amazing opportunity, one that I’m incredibly thankful for,” he said. “I am excited for people to see what we have in store.”

Marvel’s Luke Cage was canceled by Netflix back in October after two seasons. Marvel and Netflix announced the decision in a joint statement in which they expressed gratitude to Coker. “Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series,” the statement said. Prior to the announcement, a third season for the well-reviewed series was assumed to be a surefire thing.

Thursday, just as news of the new Amazon deal started making the rounds, Coker gifted fans with some behind-the-scenes shots from the Luke Cage set.
