WWE Announces Return of ‘Halftime Heat’ During Super Bowl LIII Halftime Show

Written by on January 28, 2019

The WWE is bringing back “Halftime Heat” next Sunday after a two decade hiatus. During halftime of Super Bowl LIII featuring the Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots, people will be able to choose between watching the performances of Maroon 5 and Travis Scott or a six-man tag team match where Aleister Black, Ricochet and Velveteen Dream take on NXT champion Tommaso Ciampa, new NXT North American champion Johnny Gargano and Adam Cole. It will be a continuation of the brawl involving the aforementioned wrestlers during TakeOver: Phoenix as the telecast went off air.

“Halftime Heat” will be the first time that an event airs across all of the WWE’s digital platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and WWE.com. Shawn Michaels, who made the official announcement, will also be there to call the action.

Back on January 31, 1999, the WWE held its inaugural “Halftime Heat” during halftime of Super Bowl XXXIII in an empty arena match, which ended with Mankind defeating The Rock to win his second WWE Championship.

Despite the action being held in an empty arena, “Halftime Heat” was a huge draw for the WWE that night. The organization is hoping to capitalize on the waning interest in the NFL on its biggest stage with an event that can steer people towards their own product and its rising stars.
