Academy Releases Oscar Shortlists for Contenders in 9 Categories

On Monday, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released Oscar shortlists for several categories, including: Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Song), Music (Original Score), International Feature Film, Live Action Short Film, Visual Effects and Animated Short Film.

Oh, here’s who survived the latest huge cut to get on these lists in each category:
The “Documentary Feature” list has 15 (out of a possible 195) still vying for that sweet, sweet Oscar. In alphabetical order those are:

“Documentary Short Subject” had roughly half the amount of submissions as feature length documentaries did, as their were 10 semifinalists out of 92. In alphabetic— you know what they’re all in alphabetical order. Those were:

10 movies made it for “Makeup and Hairstyling,” with the Academy adding that “[A]ll members of the Academy’s Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch will be invited to view seven-minute excerpts from each of the 10 shortlisted films on Saturday, January 4, 2020.” Those excerpts will be from:

For “Music (Original Song)” the Academy chose these 15 out of 75 submissions:

While it’s composed of movies you’re much less likely to have seen, the “International Feature Film” category is composed of the following 10 movies (out of 91) from the following 10 countries (out of…no idea). The Academy notes that those who vote in this category will have to have seen every movie on the list:

The “Visual Effects” category has 10 films that can still win. Once again The Academy described how the 5 finalists would be chosen. As they said “All members of the Visual Effects Branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the shortlisted films online or attend satellite bake-off screenings in January 2020.” Here’s what those excerpts will be clipped from:

Nomination voting will take place between January 2-7, 2020. As for when those nominees will become known to the public, that will happen on January 13, with the actual awards show taking place on February 9.
