Al Sharpton Blasts Travis Scott’s Reported Super Bowl Gig

Al Sharpton has some words of advice for Travis Scott.
Earlier this week, it was reported that the ASTROWORLD rapper was tapped to perform at the Super Bowl 2019 halftime show, alongside Maroon 5. Though Scott’s involvement has not been confirmed, many people have expressed their disappointment in the move and have encouraged the Houston emcee to bow out of the event. Sharpton echoed these concerns during a brief chat with TMZ, insisting Scott’s halftime performance would effectively endorse Colin Kaepernick’s unjust treatment.
The civil rights activist urged Scott to follow in the footsteps of other entertainers who have chosen to boycott the Super Bowl. Celebrities like Rihanna and Cardi B have reportedly rejected halftime show offers out of support for Kaepernick, who was allegedly blacklisted by the NFL for his on-field protests against police brutality and racial discrimination.
“I think anyone that goes into the halftime show is in effect directly violating those that want to raise the question that the NFL should come to terms with what they have done and continue to do to Colin Kaepernick and those that protest on criminal justice issues,” Sharpton said, suggesting Scott’s participation would be hypocritical. “[…] You can’t tell people to stand for those that take a knee and don’t go to the games and then say ‘but somebody ought to perform there and entertain.’ You’re drawing TV viewers, you’re bringing supporters, and I think that you can’t have it both ways […] You can’t fight Jim Crow and then sit in the back of the bus.”

Meek Mill has also weighed in on Scott’s reported Super Bowl performance, insisting he is cool with the rapper but didn’t understand why he would accept such a gig.
Variety also reports that JAY-Z has tried to convince Scott to back out of the performance, which makes sense considering Hov has become one of Kaepernick’s most vocal supporters.
Scott has yet to address the reports about his rumored Super Bowl performance. The game will go down Feb. 3 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
