Alejandro Bedoya Grabs Field Mic After Goal, Urges Congress to ‘End Gun Violence’

Written by on August 5, 2019

That’s one way for an athlete to ensure that their voice is heard.

On Sunday, Philadelphia Union midfielder Alejandro Bedoya scored a goal in the early minutes of his club’s nationally televised MLS match against D.C. United, and after celebrating with his teammates, Bedoya walked over to a field mic, and yelled, “Congress, do something now. End gun violence. Let’s go!”

On Saturday, 20 people were killed with 26 others injured when suspected gunman Patrick Crusius opened fire inside a Walmart in El Paso, Texas. Less than 24 hours later, another mass shooting occurred at the local bar Ned Peppers in Dayton, Ohio, which left nine dead and more than two dozen injured.

These mass shootings hit close to home for Bedoya. Growing up in Weston, Florida, the 32-year-old was about 15 minutes away from Parkland’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where 17 people were shot and killed on February 2018.

Prior to delivering his message to Congress on a field mic, Bedoya, who has 66 appearances for the U.S. men’s national team, has been stressing better gun control laws since these tragic events took place.

He just wants to see some change, and he’s not alone.
