Amazon Hit With Prime Day Boycott in Solidarity With Warehouse Workers

Written by on July 15, 2019

Prime Day, a shopping period for Amazon-favoring consumers that’s said to be rife with deals and whatnot, is getting the added bonus this year of being met with strikes and a boycott.

In protest of working conditions, employees at an Amazon Fulfillment center in Shakopee, Minnesota planned a six-hour walkout Monday. Per The Daily Beast, this group Prime Day-rivaling effort arguably marks “the first major action” of its kind stateside.

The Minnesota strike was announced earlier this month, with Shakopee center employee William Stolz telling Bloomberg at the time that the effort aims to send a message to those who may forget how the ease of shopability on Prime Day is made possible. Amazon reps, meanwhile, have shared subsequent statements claiming to already offer what such initiatives are pushing for, with a specific company interest on pay.

Others have chosen to act in solidarity with striking workers by refraining from Amazon usage during the Prime Day shopping window.

Online boycott shout-outs have notably included a rundown of all the shit Amazon boss Jeff Bezos owns, as well as firsthand accounts from those who say they experienced poor working conditions under the company.

Speaking of Bezos, he will this week be reminded of a petition signed by hundreds of thousands who are understandably demanding the company stop working with ICE.
