One of the biggest and most emotional moments of Avengers: Endgame occurred in the last scene, when we learn about Steve Rogers’s fate. After defeating Thanos and returning the Infinity Stones, Captain America (Chris Evans) travels back in time to spend his life with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell). Back in the main timeline as an old man, he hands off his shield to Anthony Mackie‘s Sam Wilson, aka Falcon.
Though Wilson eventually becomes Captain America in the comic books, Mackie admits he didn’t expect the transition to happen on-screen. In fact, Mackie claims he wasn’t aware of Wilson’s future until Evans informed him.
“We were at his house and he goes, ‘You excited?’ And I go, ‘What you talking about?'” Mackie recalled during an IMDb interview. “And he goes, ‘You don’t know?’ He jumps up, runs out of the room and comes back in with the script. He’s like, ‘Read it!'”
He continued: “And I read the scene, and I’m like, ‘Whoa,’ […] We cried. We drank. We laughed. I am very happy I got that moment with Chris, for him to not only pass me the shield, but to tell me it was happening.”
Mackie also acknowledged the significance of a black man taking on the Captain America role.
“It means a lot to me for my sons to see Captain America as a black dude, and for me to be that dude for my sons,” Mackie said. “So that moment was not just, ‘Hey, we’re acting.’ It was more, and then they cut and I cried. And Chris cried. And the Russos cried. And everyone cried. It was an emotional day.”

Mackie and Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes) are expected to reprise their MCU roles in the Disney+ series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.
