‘Aquaman’ Passes ‘Iron Man 3’ to Become Highest-Earning International Solo Superhero Film

Written by on February 25, 2019

Aquaman may not be the best superhero film ever, but the movie continues to be well-received, especially by the overseas market. The Jason Momoa-led flick has just pushed its international box office to $806 million to become the highest-grossing foreign solo superhero movie of all-time, surpassing the previous mark of $805.7 million held by Iron Man 3, according to Forbes.

Aquaman is still behind each of the three Avengers films in terms of the top-grossing superhero movies of all-time internationally, but it’s getting dangerously close to the first installment, which took home $896 million in 2012. Avengers: Infinity War stands head and shoulders above the pack after amassing $1.3 billion last year.

Aquaman has plenty to be proud of with its box office run. The film’s overall gross of $1.13 billion currently positions them at 20th in the worldwide all-time box office. The movie is already the biggest movie in DC’s Extended Universe. Given their immense success, it’s no surprise that Warner Bros. has greenlit the film’s sequel and looks to entice director James Wan into returning with the promise of getting him to “oversee the development of a second film, including the selection of writers, and then make a decision on whether to direct it when he sees the script.”
