Aquaman’ Passes ‘Wonder Woman’ to Become the Second-Largest DCEU Movie Worldwide

Written by on January 3, 2019

Aquaman continues to dominate the box office, soaring to new heights within the DC Entertainment family.

The Jason Momoa-led flick has raked in a whopping $822 million worldwide since it opened in theaters a couple weeks ago, passing Wonder Woman, which earned $821.8 million globally in theaters.

According to Screen Crush, that makes Aquaman the second-largest film in the DC Extended Universe sitting only behind Batman v Superman, which holds the top spot with $873.6 million.

Ranked among all DC Universe films ever, Aquaman already sits in the No. 4 spot behind Batman v Superman, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises. The last two Christopher Nolan Batman films earned more than $1 billion worldwide.

The James Wan-directed was dubbed a success after earning $137.2 million its first week at the domestic box office, about $6.4 million more than what Justice League earned in its debut week. Critically the film garnered both both negative and positive feedback, which adds to the surprising eclipse of both Justice League and Wonder Woman.

The underwater action flick starring Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, and Willem Dafoe is passing its predecessors mostly thanks to its tremendous success abroad. Over the Christmas holiday alone, the film experienced $550-plus in international box office receipts.

The movie also scored the second-highest rating among DC films—earning a 64 percent critic’s score on Rotten Tomatoes. Aquaman is now projected to surpass Batman v Superman, ultimately earning somewhere between $900 million and $1 billion, to become the third largest DC film ever.
