*Avengers: Endgame spoilers below*

Avengers: Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo continue to trickle out plot elements from their record-setting film that were scrapped for one reason or another. The latest revelation from the Russo Brothers comes from their interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast where the two discuss how they originally planned to have Thor-Lebowski face off against his former self, but decided against the idea because the plot got “overly complicated.”

“We did have a sequence where they finally confront each other in Asgard,” Joe Russo explained. “I can’t remember exactly why we moved off it,” Anthony Russo added, before Joe continued, “I think it got overly complicated, and we liked Cap versus Cap better.”

The Russo Brothers ultimately felt that Thor’s subplot in the time heist where he repaired his relationship with his mother in Asgard was suffice. “I think there we also deferred to the storyline of Thor and his mother, which was more resonate,” Anthony Russo said. “That was more part of Thor’s journey and repair than confronting his former self.”

They also admitted that the idea was dismissed because as the movie started to take shape, the fat needed to be trimmed down—no offense to Thor-Lebowski—in favor of covering more pertinent moments in Endgame. “Once you start developing it, you can see how crowded it gets,” Joe Russo said. “We wanted to make sure we had story space to create real conflict for the Avengers that were going back [in time].”
