The family of the late EDM DJ Avicii are launching a charitable foundation in his name in order to raise money for suicide prevention and organizations combatting mental illness.
The Tim Bergling Foundation will officially begin operations on April 20, the one-year anniversary of the DJ’s death.
“Tim wanted to make a difference – starting a foundation in his name is our way to honor his memory and continue to act in his spirit,” his family shared in a statement.
They added that the foundation will move beyond its original mandate as it continues to grow, focusing on environmental causes like conservation, protection of endagered species, and fighting climate change.
The Swedish DJ took his own life in Oman last year at the age of 28, after retiring from touring. His family inherited the massive fortune he left behind after releasing songs like the ominpresent “Wake Me Up” and the massively influential “Levels.” They appear to be using some of it to keep others from feeling the way Bergling did.
“When he stopped touring, he wanted to find a balance in life to be happy and be able to do what he loved most – music,” Avicii’s family shared in a statement following his passing. “He really struggled with thoughts about meaning, life, happiness. He could not go on any longer. He wanted to find peace. Tim was not made for the business machine he found himself in; he was a sensitive guy who loved his fans but shunned the spotlight.”
