Best Scary Movies: The 50 Scariest Movies of All Time
Written by SOURCE on October 22, 2018
As Halloween approaches, scary movies are on everyone’s radar. Whether you’re holing up in your living room with classics like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, or checking out the latest creepshows like A24‘s spring hit Hereditary and Luca Guadagnino’s remake of Suspiria, October is undoubtedly the best time of year to get caught up on some of the scariest movies out there.
Scary movies in general can be pretty polarizing: some people live for the suspense, the jumps, and the nightmares that a great horror flick can bring. Others can do without haunting thoughts of paranormal activity, crazed serial killers, and other spooky characters keeping them up at night. But if there’s any time to set your fears aside and enjoy a scary movie, it’s now; what better way to get into the Halloween spirit than by scaring the crap out of yourself?
It’s not relegated to in-theater experiences, either—while watching films about ghosts, ghouls, slashers, and other inexplicable darkness, terror can be even more palpable when you’re home alone, vulnerable to whatever might be lurking beyond the front door. It’s a rush. That fourth wall makes you feel safe to enjoy the scares. Once the film’s over, you’re ready to quote that great ’80s horror character actor Tom Atkins, from the 1986 cult classic Night of the Creeps: “Thrill me.”
No horror films have thrilled moviegoers more than the 50 scariest movies of all time; fair warning, you’ll probably lose some sleep over these.
