Blood Orange Performs “Charcoal Baby” on ‘Tonight Show’

Say what you will, or what I already have, about the late night Jimmys and their Tonight Shows and whatnot, but at least one late night Jimmy has admittedly set his show up for a particularly stacked week in terms of musical guests. Monday, the Tonight Show kicked off a week of post-holiday malaise with a perfect Blood Orange performance.
Indeed, Dev Hynes brought his Negro Swan single “Charcoal Baby” to Studio 6B Monday night. Catch that performance in full up top, then catch the just-released “Smoke” remix featuring Yves Tumor and Ian Isiah:
Earlier this month, Blood Orange joined Slick Rick on the new Mariah Carey track “Giving Me Life.” The song, featured on Carey’s must-hear Caution album, was co-produced by Hynes and Carey and joins additional ingeniously complementary album features from Gunna and Ty Dolla Sign.
This month also marked the five-year anniversary of Cupid Deluxe, an occasion Hynes noted in an Instagram caption detailing the personal difficulties of 2013. “A month after the drop I lost everything I owned, my apt, music, and my lovely dog in a fire,” he said, ultimately closing out his comment with a bittersweet “RIP Cupid.”
