Blue Ivy Carter Wins NAACP Image Award for “Brown Skin Girl”

Written by on February 23, 2020

Blue Ivy Carter is now an award-winning artist—just like her mom and dad.

On Friday night, JAY-Z and Beyoncé‘s eldest child received the NAACP Image Award for “Brown Skin Girl”—a joint track that appeared on the 2019 album The Lion King: The Gift. The 8-year-old shared the honor—for Outstanding Duo, Group or Collaboration—with her mother, Saint JHN, and Wizkid.

Blue Ivy’s grandma, Tina Knowles Lawson, celebrated the achievement in an Instagram post, writing: “… The youngest artist to win a major award👏🏾👏🏾Grandma is soo proud of you❤️❤️❤️ 8 years old!!!!🙏🏾❤️ You are giving all the beautiful little brown girls a voice.”

The win was announced during the NAACP Image Awards dinner, ahead of Saturday’s televised ceremony. Though the Carters did not attend the event, Variety reports Beyoncé was one of the night’s biggest winners, having received awards for Outstanding Variety (Series or Special) for Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé, Outstanding Album for Homecoming: The Live Album, Outstanding Song – Traditional for “Spirit,” Outstanding Song – Contemporary for “Before I Let Go,” Outstanding Soundtrack/Compilation Album for The Lion King: The Gift, and Outstanding Female Artist.

Fifteen-year-old actress Marsai Martin also secured multiple wins Friday night, earning Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture and Outstanding Breakthrough Performance in a Motion Picture for 2019’s Little, as well as Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Performance by a Youth for Black-ish.
