Britney Spears Shares Instagram Post Calling for Wealth Distribution and General Strike

Written by on March 25, 2020

As the coronavirus pandemic continues to shake the U.S. economy, more and more people are questioning the so-called marvels of capitalism. Business have closed down, thousands of people have been laid off, and the flaws of our health care system have never been more apparent. Many in the working class now find themselves in precarious positions, thanks in large part to corporate plutocracy and the obscene concentration of wealth. It’s clear that people across the country are getting fed up, as we’ve heard increasing demands for structural change.

But it isn’t just working-class folk who are calling for a revolution: Millionaire Britney Spears is seemingly down for the cause.

On Monday, the 38-year-old pop icon shared an Instagram post that promoted the redistribution of wealth as well as a general strike. The text graphic was originally shared by user Mimi Zhu, and urged readers to prioritize love during this time of fear and uncertainty. The post concluded with some strong political wording, which led some to deem Spears a “Marxist queen.”

“During this time of isolation, we need connection now more than ever. Call you loved ones, write virtual love letters. Technologies like virtual communication, streaming and broadcasting are part of our community collaboration,” the post read. “We will learn to kiss and hold each other through the waves of the web. We will feed each other, redistribute wealth, strike. We will understand our own importance from the places we must stay. Communion moves beyond walls. We can still be together.”

Spears captioned the post with “Communion goes beyond walls” followed by a series of rose emojis—a symbol widely associated with the Democratic Socialists of America.
